How Do I Get A Higher Ranking On Google Search?

If I had a dollar for every client who has asked me this, well, I might be relaxing on a beach instead of toiling away on the machine. There’s a common myth that just because you have a website, then you should start rising up Google. If only it were that easy.

There are so many factors that go into the equation, it is quite overwhelming. The short answer is that there are many steps you have to go through to get to the top rung. You obviously need a website. You need to have H1 tags on each page (a title at the top of each page). You need keywords, pertinent to your business, sprinkled about on every page. You need new content added to your website on a regular basis (hint, hint, this is why I’m back on the weekly newsletter train). You need to work social media. This list is just scratching the surface and I could go on and on, but this will keep you busy enough for now.

Meta Descriptions

What are they? They are short sentences, 160 characters or less, that give a summary of each web page. They tell search engines, like Google, information about your individual web pages. Search engines will take your meta descriptions and display them on search, basically like a free ad.

A page's meta description must utilize keywords that your page is targeting, but also create an interesting enough description that a searcher will want to click on it (upping your click-through-rate, aka CTR). The higher your CTR gets, the higher up the ladder you go.

What They Look Like

A client of mine requested, during the summer, that I add a meta description to each of their Case Result pages and their Focus Area pages. Just this week, I revisited these descriptions and tweaked them to see how we can move the CTR needle during this month.

I search these keywords on Google.
