Learning As They Go

As we are now in month 2 of life as we know it, I have been utterly amazed by the local South Bay businesses that have been learning and applying new skills sets on the fly. In a matter of days brick and mortar stores were faced with an imminent shutdown that threatened their livelihood in a very real and a very scary way. They had to make a quick decision in an effort to stay afloat. What would that decision be?

Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now?

One move would be to shutter and ride out the storm until things flattened out. But that could prove to be a long wait. The other choice, pivot, and start selling once again. And this is where I see so many businesses showing courage and determination, because the alternative wasn’t ever really a viable option.

Small Biz, Big Hearts

Case in point, my dear friend Carolina Hartigan, owner of Alandrea. She celebrated her 25th year in business last fall, with a lavish in-store party complete with yummy bites, champagne, charity donations and giveaways. Who could have predicted that within a few short months, this happy celebration would be a wistful memory?

Not one to let things get the best of her, as demonstrated in her battle with kicking breast cancer to the curb, she made the choice to move the shop online. This is an idea that she has toyed with for many years, this situation forced her hand. Because this feat did not happen overnight, she started working her Instagram page like a champ. Posting new merchandise to her feed and stories and offering contactless pick up and local deliveries to her dedicated clients.

Within a month, she has created a gorgeous e commerce website that she launched this week - shopalandrea.com! Congrats, Carolina!
